Flights between Belfast and London
The flight is about seventy-five minutes whichever way you do it. Everything that decides how long the journey actually takes happens on the ground at the London end.
Five London airports, ranked by where you are going
The cheapest fare is frequently to the airport that costs you the most to escape. Compare total journey time and total cost, including the train at the other end.
| Airport | Into central London | Pick it for |
|---|---|---|
| Heathrow (LHR) | Underground or express rail, 15–50 min | Connections onward, west London |
| Gatwick (LGW) | Rail, ~30 min to Victoria or London Bridge | South London, the south coast |
| Stansted (STN) | Rail, ~50 min to Liverpool Street | Cheap fares, east London, Cambridge |
| Luton (LTN) | Shuttle plus rail, ~50–60 min | Cheap fares, the north of the city |
| London City (LCY) | DLR, ~20 min to Bank | Canary Wharf, the City, day trips |
Which Belfast airport
Both serve London. Belfast City is quicker to get to from the city and quicker to move through; Belfast International tends to carry the cheaper fares and more low-cost capacity. See the comparison of the two airports.
Timing and reliability
This is one of the busiest air corridors in the UK, which cuts both ways. Frequency is high, so a missed or cancelled flight usually means a wait rather than a lost day. Equally, it runs through some of the most congested airspace in Europe, and morning delays propagate through the day.
If you are connecting onward from London, protect the connection with a generous gap or book the whole thing on one ticket. A separately booked domestic leg that arrives late is entirely your problem.
The alternative nobody costs properly
Ferry plus train or car is slower in hours and sometimes cheaper in total for a family with luggage and a vehicle, particularly when you weigh it against four sets of hold baggage and airport parking at both ends. It is rarely the right answer for one person with a laptop bag, and worth pricing for a car full of people.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight from Belfast to London?
Around 75 minutes in the air. Door to door, allow three to four hours depending on which London airport and where you are going.
Which is the fastest option overall?
Belfast City to London City, for anywhere near the DLR. Both airports are small, both are close in, and neither involves a long rail leg.
Do I need a passport for a domestic UK flight?
Airlines require photographic ID, and each carrier sets its own list of what it accepts. A passport is never the wrong answer; a bank card is.
Is it cheaper to fly from Belfast International?
Often, because that is where the low-cost capacity sits. Add the cost of getting to and from both airports before deciding.
