Why this coast matters from Belfast

It is reached via the shortest flight on the route map, and the beaches are the gentlest on the Spanish mainland. For a family with small children, that combination is hard to beat within three hours of Belfast.

The catch is the transfer. Barcelona to Salou is a genuine hour and ten minutes, which is a long coach ride at the end of a flight.

Who it suits

Book it if you are travelling with young children, you want shallow water and a flat promenade, or the theme park is part of the plan.

Look elsewhere if you want a long season, a short transfer, or a coast with much going on outside July and August.

The beaches are the product

The name is literal: the sand here is fine and golden, the beaches are wide, and the water shelves so gradually that you can walk a long way out at Salou and La Pineda and still be waist-deep.

That single physical fact is why this stretch became a family coast rather than a party one, and why it is worth the longer transfer if you are travelling with a three-year-old.

PortAventura, briefly

One of the largest theme parks in Europe, a short shuttle from Salou, with a separate water park and a Ferrari-branded park alongside it. It is the reason a large share of the hotels here exist.

If it is on your list: buy tickets in advance, go on a weekday, and get there for opening. In August the difference between arriving at ten and arriving at nine is roughly two hours of queuing across the day.

Tarragona, which nobody books

Twenty minutes from Salou there is a city with a Roman amphitheatre built into the cliff above the sea, a circus under the modern streets and an aqueduct outside town. The whole Roman ensemble is UNESCO-listed.

It is the best half day on this coast and it is almost entirely ignored by the people staying four kilometres away.

Where to stay

  • Families and the theme park

    Salou

The main resort: long sandy beaches, a palm-lined promenade, and a short shuttle to PortAventura. Lively in July and August.

  • Food and a quieter base

    Cambrils

A working fishing port four kilometres from Salou, with the best restaurants on this coast and a much calmer feel.

  • Small children

    La Pineda

Shallow, gently shelving water and a flat promenade. Purpose-built, quiet, and the easiest of the three with a pushchair.

  • Roman ruins and a city

    Tarragona

A city with an amphitheatre above the sea, a UNESCO-listed Roman ensemble, and almost no package tourism.

When to go

A shorter season than the southern coasts. July and August carry most of the trade, and much of the resort infrastructure follows.

Typical averages, not forecasts. Sea temperature lags air temperature by roughly two months, which is why October often swims better than June.

Mistakes people make

Booking it as a Barcelona base. Salou to Barcelona is over an hour each way. Fine for one day trip, exhausting as a daily commute.

Assuming Salou and Cambrils are interchangeable. They are four kilometres apart and have completely different atmospheres. Salou is loud; Cambrils is a fishing port with good restaurants.

Going in October. The season here ends earlier than on the southern coasts. By mid-October a lot of it is closed.

Doing the theme park on a Saturday in August. Midweek, early, and buy the tickets in advance. Queues in peak season are the whole experience otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Costa Dorada from Barcelona airport?

Around seventy minutes by road to Salou. There is also a rail connection via Barcelona, which is cheaper and slower.

Is it good for small children?

Unusually good. The beaches here shelve very gradually, which is exactly what the name of the coast and its whole family trade are built on.

Do I need to do PortAventura?

No, and plenty of families come for the beach alone. If you do go, buy in advance and go midweek.

Salou or Cambrils?

Salou if you want the resort experience and the park. Cambrils if you want a quieter week and better food.
