Flights from Belfast to Girona

A legacy route page from the era when Girona was the cheap way into Catalonia. The city is better than its reputation as a budget airport ever suggested.

Where the route stands

Girona (GRO) was, for about fifteen years, the low-cost gateway to Catalonia — sold as Barcelona, an hour and a quarter away. That model has largely wound down, and Belfast is not currently among the airports served.

Getting there now

Fly to Barcelona, then take the high-speed train north. Girona is under forty minutes away by rail, which is faster than the bus transfer from Girona airport to Barcelona ever was.

By car it is about an hour and fifteen minutes, and a car is the right choice if the Costa Brava rather than the city is your destination.

Why the city is worth the trip

Girona is one of the most rewarding small cities in Spain and it spent two decades being treated as a car park for cheap flights.

The old town is stacked above the river Onyar, its houses painted ochre and red and reflected in the water. The Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is among the best preserved anywhere in Europe. You can walk the Roman and medieval walls around the whole eastern edge of the old city, and the cathedral has the widest Gothic nave ever built.

It is also under an hour from the Costa Brava.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fly from Belfast to Girona?

Not directly at present. Girona's network has contracted considerably since its low-cost peak.

How do I get to Girona now?

Fly to Barcelona and take the high-speed train, which covers the distance in under forty minutes, or drive in about an hour and a quarter.

Is Girona itself worth visiting?

Very much so. It has one of the best-preserved medieval Jewish quarters in Europe, city walls you can walk, and a cathedral with the widest Gothic nave in the world.
