The Maspalomas sand dunes meeting the Atlantic in southern Gran Canaria
Canaries · from BFS

Flights from Belfast to Gran Canaria

A continent in miniature, as the tourist board never stops saying. Annoyingly, it is true: desert dunes in the south, a proper Spanish city in the north, and pine forest at fifteen hundred metres in between.

Why this route matters from Belfast

Gran Canaria is the Canary island that does not ask you to choose between a beach holiday and something more interesting. The south is as purpose-built as anywhere in Europe, the north is a working city of nearly four hundred thousand people, and the middle is a mountain range with villages in it.

From Belfast it is the second-longest flight on the route map, and the same winter logic applies as everywhere in the Canaries: this is a January destination that also works in July.

Who Gran Canaria suits

Book it if you want winter sun with more than a resort strip to look at, you like sheltered swimming, or you want the option of a city day.

Look elsewhere if you want the shortest transfer in the Canaries (Lanzarote) or the most reliable sunshine statistics (Tenerife south).

The thing that makes it different

The Maspalomas dunes are not landscaping. They are a protected six-square- kilometre dune system where the desert meets the Atlantic, and standing in the middle of them you cannot see a building in any direction.

It is a fifteen-minute walk from a hotel with a swim-up bar to somewhere that feels like the Sahara, and there is nothing else quite like that within four hours of Belfast. Go early or late, take water, and keep to the marked routes.

Where to stay

  • Families and the dunes

    Maspalomas

Low-rise, spread out and anchored by the dune field and the lighthouse. The most relaxed of the southern resorts.

  • Nightlife and value

    Playa del Inglés

The dense, busy heart of the south coast. Enormous choice of bars and restaurants, and a long sandy beach that never quite fills.

  • Sheltered swimming

    Puerto Rico

Built into a ravine around a man-made bay. Extremely sheltered water, steep streets, and a marina at the bottom of everything.

  • Calm water and families

    Amadores

An artificial beach in a protected cove next to Puerto Rico. Flat, clean, sheltered and unapologetically manufactured.

  • A city with a beach attached

    Las Palmas

The island capital in the north, with Playa de las Canteras — a three-kilometre urban beach protected by a natural reef.

When to go

The south is measurably sunnier than the north all year. These figures are for the resort coast, not for Las Palmas.

Typical averages, not forecasts. Sea temperature lags air temperature by roughly two months, which is why October often swims better than June.

Mistakes people make

Assuming the whole island has the south's weather. The north is greener because it is cloudier. Las Palmas in February can be overcast while Maspalomas is in full sun forty minutes away.

Booking Playa del Inglés without checking which end. It runs from family-quiet to very much not, over a walkable distance. The street address matters more than the resort name.

Treating the dunes as a beach extension. Maspalomas dunes are a protected natural reserve, they are genuinely large, and crossing them in midday sun without water is a bad afternoon.

Ignoring the north entirely. Las Palmas has an old town, a city beach that locals actually use, and the best food on the island.

Frequently asked questions

North or south of Gran Canaria?

South for guaranteed sun and resorts, north for the city, the food and the greenery. The mountain spine in the middle creates a real weather divide, exactly as it does on Tenerife.

How far is the airport from the resorts?

Around half an hour to Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, forty-five minutes to Puerto Rico, and twenty-five minutes north to Las Palmas.

Is Gran Canaria good for families?

Very. Amadores and Maspalomas both have sheltered, gently shelving water, and the resorts are built for it.

Is it worth going into the mountains?

Yes, and allow a full day. Roque Nublo and the road up to Tejeda are the reason the island earns the continent-in-miniature line.
